Whether you are familiar with hydrogen-enriched water or just learning about it, it is important to understand the significance of parts per million (ppm). What Is PPM?

Parts per million (ppm) is a term that refers to measuring the chemical composition of a solution, most often water. A ppm measurement identifies how many parts of a certain chemical make up the whole unit or solution. (1)

The Importance of PPM With Hydrogen-Infused Water

When it comes to hydrogen-infused water, it is important to know how many ppm of hydrogen gas is in your water. Why? Because the IHSA has defined the minimum amount of hydrogen gas you need in your water in order to experience hydrogen’s therapeutic benefits.

The therapeutic baseline for hydrogen gas in water is 0.5 ppm. The IHSA has made this its baseline standard for devices that produce hydrogen-infused water. This means that products need to produce at least 0.5 ppm of hydrogen gas in a test sample in order to be labeled as an effective source of hydrogen-enriched water.

Therapeutic Benefits of Hydrogen-Enriched Water

When you ingest the therapeutic amount of hydrogen gas, you can begin to experience hydrogen’s powerful benefits! Molecular hydrogen has been proven to offer a variety of benefits, including improved gut function, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, improved brain function, increased energy, and more.

In order to experience these benefits, you need to ingest hydrogen-enriched water that has a minimum of 0.5 ppm of hydrogen gas. As previously stated, this is the therapeutic baseline for hydrogen gas in water. Once you ingest 0.5 ppm of hydrogen gas, your body can start to experience this tiny molecule’s many benefits. It is also important to note that drinking water with a hydrogen concentration over 0.5 ppm does not mean that you will get greater benefits.

All of our Echo Antioxidant Water ™ Machines produce over 0.5 ppm of hydrogen gas to ensure that you are getting the therapeutic amount necessary to experience the benefits you want. However, some companies claim to infuse their water with large amounts of hydrogen gas, such as 12 ppm. While this may seem like the better choice, you will not experience any greater benefits from drinking hydrogen-rich water with 12 ppm than you would drinking hydrogen-rich water with 0.5 ppm.

How Do You Measure PPM?

There are several different ways to measure the ppm of hydrogen gas in water; however, the most effective and widely used method is gas chromatography (GC). With gas chromatography, scientists can measure the dissolved hydrogen gas in water and other liquids. (2) How do they do this?

At H2 Analytics, an authorized tester for IHSA standards, the process begins by injecting a sample of the hydrogen-enriched water into an injector port. From here, the dissolved hydrogen gas is removed via heat and forced up a tube with a pressurized, inert carrier gas, such as nitrogen or argon. (2)

Once the hydrogen gas passes through the tube (called a column), it goes through a thermal conductivity detector (TCD), where it influences the electrical characteristics of a Wheatstone bridge made of tungsten filaments. These characteristics, or responses, are small but measurable. A change in voltage drop in the filaments will be proportional to the amount of hydrogen in the test sample. By comparing the electrical response to the standard, gas chromatography can help determine the hydrogen ppm concentration of the sample. (2)

On June 10, 2021, H2 Analytics completed testing each of our Echo Antioxidant Water ™ Machines to verify the ppm of hydrogen gas — and we couldn’t be happier with the results! Each of our machines far exceeds the minimum standard of 0.5 ppm. Just take a look for yourself:

  • Echo Go™: The 3-minute cycle produces 1.23 ppm, and the 10-minute cycle produces 1.88 ppm.
  • Echo H2 Machine™: Produces an average of 1.59 ppm.
  • Echo H2 Pitcher™: The 10-minute cycle produces 1.48 ppm, and the 20-minute cycle produces 1.75 ppm.
  • Echo H2 Server™: Produces an average of 1.53 ppm.
  • Echo Ultimate™: Produces an average of 1.65 ppm.
