The word superfood first appeared when the United Fruit Company in the 20th century created a campaign to sell bananas. The company used the term to remind consumers their bananas were full of beneficial nutrients.

As the fruit became more popular, so did the term. People began using the word “superfood” to describe other fruits and vegetables which had many health benefits and high nutritional values.
