How Hydrogen Water Benefits Athletes

HYDROGEN WATER FOR SWIMMERS

If you’re a competitive swimmer, adding hydrogen water to your workout routine can have a variety of benefits. A study performed on mice found that those who were supplied with hydrogen water showed a higher capacity for swimming endurance and anti-fatigue effects, among other benefits. (1) While you may not experience these benefits immediately, this study showed results after four weeks, which means it won’t be long before hydrogen water may start boosting your endurance.

HYDROGEN WATER FOR CYCLISTS

A 2018 study with male cyclists tested performance difference in repetitive sprints to exhaustion over a 30-minute period. All participants received two liters of water a day over two weeks, but half received placebo water while the other half received hydrogen-infused water. Results found that those who drank hydrogen water maintained their power output throughout the repetitive sprints, whereas those who had placebo water decreased significantly in power output by the eighth sprint. Hydrogen Water Can Prevent The Increase of Blood Lactate in High-Intensity Workouts

Researchers have performed a wide variety of studies regarding how hydrogen water can benefit athletes, and many studies showed that hydrogen water can help prevent the increase of exercise-induced blood lactate, also known as lactic acid. One study performed in 2012 with a group of male soccer players showed that drinking water infused with hydrogen gas before exercising helped prevent an increase in blood lactate levels while also reducing the decline of muscle function. (3) Another randomized, double-blind study involving healthy males also found that hydrogen-infused water can reduce blood lactate levels. Just like the first study, this one found that adequate pre-exercise hydration with hydrogen water led to a reduced level of blood lactate in higher exercise intensities. (4) Why is this significant? While lactate (aka lactic acid) is commonly thought to cause post-exercise muscle soreness, it actually causes the burning sensation you feel while actively working out. (5) By reducing your levels of blood lactate during exercise, you can avoid the burning feeling that may halt you from pushing yourself.

Hydrogen Water Can Reduce Inflammation and Oxidative Stress

One of the most well-known benefits of hydrogen gas is its ability to help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. This can be a great benefit to athletes and their overall performance. There are several studies that demonstrate this benefit. One in particular tested the inflammatory response in rats who received molecular hydrogen treatment. Results showed that hydrogen helped reduce surges of exercise-induced inflammatory cytokines. (6) A hypothesis suggests that muscular and tissue microtrauma caused by exercise can trigger the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. These cytokines initiate the body’s inflammatory response, and while this is a normal response in the body and regular rest would be sufficient for proper healing, over exercising or lack of rest can push the inflammatory response into a more chronic response, resulting in greater inflammation. (7) By reducing cytokine production initiated during exercise, hydrogen may be able to ease exercise-induced inflammation and its side effects. (6) This study also found that in just three hours after exercise, hydrogen increased superoxide dismutase (which is used to fight oxidation) and helped counteract natural exercise-induced increases in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (a marker of oxidative stress). (6) This combination shows that hydrogen water may be key to helping athletes reduce inflammation and oxidative stress caused by exercise. While some inflammation is good during exercise, as it helps your muscles increase in strength and endurance, too much inflammation can lead to swelling, soreness, bruising, and even tears or other significant injury, which can hinder your athletic training or performance.

Hydrogen Water Can Boost Gut Health

On occasion, athletes will experience injuries, such as an ankle sprain. While the traditional RICE method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) can definitely help heal a sprained ankle, researchers tested the effects of hydrogen water on recovery. Why? Because molecular hydrogen has recently been suggested as a possible treatment in musculoskeletal medicine.

In one particular case study, a professional athlete suffered a grade II ankle sprain, meaning that they experienced a more severe partial tearing of their ankle ligament. This athlete received six sessions of hydrotherapy with hydrogen water during the first 24 hours post-injury. As a result, the athlete experienced a 50-point drop on the pain scale, dropping from moderate pain to mild pain. Ankle swelling also went down by 2.8% and range of movement improved by 27.9% by the follow-up appointment. (10)

This case study shows that hydrogen water has the potential to help ease pain and swelling while improving range of motion after an ankle sprain.
