Aging is a natural process that everybody goes through. But have you ever noticed how some bodies age better than others? While a lot of aging has to do with our genetics, there are natural ways to decrease the effects of aging. One of the easiest and most effective ways to decrease the mental and physical effects of aging is by increasing your molecular hydrogen intake. In this article, we will discuss only a few of the amazing effects hydrogen can have on the aging process.

It affects our entire body from our skin to our bones to our brains. A lot of how well our body ages has to do with what we eat, what we drink, the amount of stress we put on our bodies, and our environment. In this article, we will explore how drinking hydrogen-enriched water can help slow the aging process both mentally and physically.

Aging is often accompanied by a decline in cognitive function, including memory loss, inability to solve problems, and difficulty comprehending complex ideas. A decline in cognitive function can be one of the most distinct and hard-to-manage symptoms of old age.

Hydrogen water has been shown to be an effective treatment “for prevention of spatial memory decline and age-related brain alterations.” One study found that “treatment with hydrogen water for 30 days prevents age-related declines in cognitive abilities” in mice. The treatment also showed increased levels of brain serotonin and elevated serum antioxidant activities. Researchers also noted that after 18 weeks of drinking H2 water, results showed “inhibited neurodegeneration in hippocampus,” or the part of your brain that controls emotion, memory, and the autonomic nervous system. In short, hydrogen water has been shown to decrease the aging effects on mental capabilities, including the abilities to reason, plan, solve problems, and comprehend complex ideas. (1)

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), across the world, close to 50 million people have dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases every year. Dementia has been proven as one of the leading causes of disability and dependency among older people worldwide. (2)

In a study done on women 65 years of age and older, those who inhaled H2 once a day for 15 minutes showed an improvement in cognitive function test scores. Those who inhaled the H2 went from test scores pointing toward mild dementia to test scores reporting normal cognitive function. These women also saw significantly better performance with word recall and word recognition. (3)

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the number one cause of death in America. One person dies every 36 seconds from heart disease each year. (4)

In a pilot study done on men and women above the age of 65, preliminary results showed that men and women who inhaled hydrogen for 20 minutes once per day for four weeks showed a cumulative drop in the American Heart Association’s (AHA’s) cardiovascular risk scores. The preliminary results also showed increased cardiorespiratory fitness and handgrip strength. Along with the before-mentioned positive results, inhaled H2 tended to reduce total serum cholesterol and fasting glycemia. Additionally, “no participants reported any adverse events of H2 inhalation.” Although this was a pilot study, the preliminary data shows that short-term inhalation of gaseous H2 appeared to affect various cardiometabolic risk factors in both older men and women. Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the human body. One of collagen’s main functions is to provide your skin with structure. One major side effect of aging is that your body begins to decrease in collagen production. Lower levels of collagen can cause dry skin and the formation of wrinkles. (6) Studies have shown that increased levels of hydrogen on a cellular level have led to increased levels of collagen production. Increasing collagen production in the body has been proven to improve your skin’s elasticity and decrease your skin’s wrinkle formations. (7)
