Many people around the world suffer from behavioral and mood disorders. No matter how severe your condition may be, it can wreak havoc on your daily life. Research is emerging that molecular hydrogen may be an effective way to help reduce the effects of various mental illnesses. One way to experience these benefits is with Echo Antioxidant Water™, which is water with infused molecular hydrogen.

Over recent years, many people have recognized the importance of mental health and the seriousness of mental, mood, or behavioral disorders. The World Health Organization recognizes depression as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide (1). While millions of people struggle with mental health, it is easy for those who suffer to feel extremely alone.

At Synergy Science™, we take your health seriously, and that includes your mental health. While mental and behavioral disorders can arise from a variety of contributing factors, we want to do whatever we can to help you become your best, healthiest self in every way. And for some, achieving that may involve Antioxidant Water™, which is infused with hydrogen gas.

WHAT IS A BEHAVIORAL OR MOOD DISORDER?

A behavioral disorder typically involves a pattern of disruptive behavior, such as inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, or criminal activity. Some of the most commonly recognized behavioral disorders include oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). (2)

A mood disorder involves your general state of emotion or mood, often resulting in emotions that are distorted in a way that is inconsistent with your circumstances. Mood disorders can often interfere with your ability to function normally. Some of the most common mood disorders include major
depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), and depression related to other illnesses or medications. (3)

WHAT CAUSES BEHAVIORAL OR MOOD DISORDERS?

Both behavioral and mood disorders can be caused by a variety of factors. Some of the most common causes include chemical imbalances within the brain, stressful life events or situations, home life, genetics, and even learned behavior. (4,5)

Inflammation and Mental Health

In recent studies over the years, scientists have found that inflammation can also contribute to the severity or creation of behavioral and mood disorders. More specifically, both depression and bipolar patients have repeatedly shown elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (meaning they experience greater inflammation than normal). (1) Another study found that inflammation is a common factor and most likely a risk factor for all types of psychiatric disturbances, including everything from schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive behavior to depression and mania. (6)

Many mood and behavioral disorders occur as a result of a dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex. Also known as the “psychic cell” of the brain, the prefrontal cortex is responsible for executive functions, such as making choices, mediating thought, and governing emotional and social control. It is also the area of the brain that is most strongly involved with your personality and conscience. (6)

Recent research has found that such disruptions within the prefrontal cortex are an underlying cause of neurological disorders, including ADHD, schizophrenia, autism, drug addictions, and depression. (6) A disruption in the prefrontal cortex can arise from a variety of things, including inflammation, and a promising area of research focuses on how inflammation can contribute to major psychiatric diseases, such as depression and bipolar disease.

There are several studies that show how chronic inflammation and multi-systemic inflammatory diseases can affect the brain — as well as other major organs — and contribute to mental illnesses. (7) However, other studies have shown that anti-inflammatory agents, such as hydrogen gas, may be effective with other treatments to help patients overcome mood disorders. (1)

HOW ANTIOXIDANT WATER CAN HELP WITH BEHAVIOR AND MOOD DISORDERS

The hydrogen molecule has long been studied for its various benefits, including that of fighting inflammation. Various studies over the years have investigated hydrogen’s potential to aid in neurological conditions, and so far, the results are very promising.

One study looked at how water infused with hydrogen gas can help reduce autistic-like behavior in mice. The results found that treating mice with hydrogen-infused water helped to reverse any alterations to the mice’s levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). (8) TNF-α is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that can initiate the production of IL-6, a common marker of inflammation. (9,10) By helping to mediate the levels of these compounds, the hydrogen-infused water helped to reverse autistic-like behavior and demonstrated its potential to help prevent autism and other related disorders. (8)

Another study evaluated how hydrogen can help those with blast-induced mild traumatic brain injury (bmTBI). bmTBI is caused by the detonation of explosive devices and is becoming increasingly common among military personnel, particularly those who served in areas such as Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq. Although the “how” is still unclear, bmTBI has been found to be associated with several psycho-neurological deficits. This particular study found that molecular hydrogen treatment helped weaken behavioral deficits in patients with bmTBI. This suggests that hydrogen gas could be a powerful and affordable treatment option for those who suffer from bmTBI and its effects. (11)

A third study focused on how hydrogen-rich water may be able to help those who experience major depressive disorder as a result of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. This study found that hydrogen significantly reduced chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS-induced levels of interleukin 1-beta (IL-1B)), reactive oxygen species production, and caspase-1. IL-1B is a pro-inflammatory cytokine, and caspase-1 is its converting enzyme. Reactive oxygen species are also major contributors to oxidative stress. By reducing factors of oxidative stress and inflammation, the results of this study suggest that hydrogen can have beneficial effects on depressive-like behavior. (12)
