Are You Using the Best Water Filter?
Have you ever thought about what’s in the water you drink? Although the United States has one of the safest water supplies for its citizens, that doesn’t mean that the water you drink is completely free of contaminants. (1)
Those who get their water from community systems abide by the strict regulations set up by the Safe Drinking Water Act, and many states have their own standards that meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements. (2) However, some people have limited access to clean water, and new pollutants and chemicals present new challenges.
With your health vulnerable to a variety of contaminants, it is essential that you have high-quality, effective water filters to clean your drinking water as much as possible. To help ensure that you always have access to safe and clean drinking water, we use state-of-the-art water filters in machines that require additional filtration.
Want to know just how well our machines filter your water? We’ve laid out the details on what is in our Echo Replacement Filters and what they remove so you can always drink your Antioxidant Water™ with confidence.
What Is the Replacement Filter?
Nearly all of our Echo Antioxidant Water™ Machines use the Replacement Filter. The following machines come with an Echo Filter, which can be replaced with the Replacement Filter when needed:
- Echo 9 Machine™
- Echo 9 Ultra Machine™
- Echo H2 Machine™
- Echo Ultimate™
The Replacement Filter is designed to filter up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters) of water or six months of use. Once it has reached this limit, you can easily replace the filter in your machine for continued protection.
Our Replacement Filter is NSF-certified for its contaminant reduction. The fiber filters within the Replacement Filter are also compliant with California’s Health and Safety Code Section 166875 and Vermont Act 193. Our Replacement Filter has also been third-party tested and proven to reduce contaminants by up to 97.6% by the Health Research Institute Laboratories. (3)
What Is the Replacement Filter Made Of?
Our fiber filter removes particles and contaminants that are between 5 and 10 microns in size. This size range is typical for the average plant spore, dust, and mold that might be in your water. Because 5 and 10 microns are so small in size, it can be easier for these filters to fill up with particles and debris. (4,5) The Replacement Filter, however, has five layers of fiber filter. Each layer separates other filter media, and with five layers of fiber filter, your filter will last longer than if it had just one.
Activated Carbon From Coconut Husks
Activated carbon is a common type of filter that is made of organic material that is high in carbon. (6) Our activated carbon filters are made from coconut husks. This natural filter is effective at improving the taste of your water while also removing naturally occurring compounds, synthetic organic chemicals, and taste and odor compounds through two different processes. (7,8)
The first process is absorption, where activated carbon works to remove organic contaminants, such as pesticides, timber, and petroleum-based waste. (9) Activated carbon also removes residual disinfectants, such as chlorine and chloramine, through a process called catalytic reduction. This chemical reaction involves activated carbon removing disinfectants by increasing the rate of decomposition or converting the chloramines to harmless substances. (10)
Activated carbon can eliminate contaminants anywhere from 0.5 microns to 50 microns. (11) With this large surface area, it can easily absorb a variety of contaminants. Activated carbon is highly effective at removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are man-made chemicals that can end up in your drinking water. (7)
Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) 55 is made up of finely ground copper and zinc alloys. When contaminated water passes through a filter of KDF 55, the alloys create a chemical reaction called oxidation-reduction (redox). This process causes atoms and contaminants with a positive charge to be attracted to zinc and contaminants with a negative charge to be attracted to copper. This results in the removal of electrons from contaminants, rendering them harmless. (12)
KDF 55 is designed to remove a variety of harmful contaminants from your drinking water, including up to 99% of water-soluble lead, mercury, chromium, nickel, and other dissolved metals. (13)
Biocera TO Ceramic Balls
Biocera balls are a type of filter medium that has been tested and certified at NSF International for material safety. In the Replacement Filter, we use Biocera tourmaline ceramic balls. Ceramic is well-known as an effective generic filter, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) listing it as effective at removing bacteria and larger protozoans (a single-celled microscopic animal, such as amoeba). (14) Ceramic filter balls have also been shown to have a filter efficiency of 5% to 10% higher than general quartz sand filters, another common filter medium. (15)

How Do Other Filters Compare?
Brita® is well-known for its water pitchers and faucet filtration systems. They have a variety of filters available, each with its own degree of filtration capabilities. Their standard pitcher uses a coconut-based activated carbon filter, like that included in our Replacement Filter. (16) Between all of the different filters available, Brita® can filter out the following contaminants:
- Chlorine taste and odor
- TTHMs (total trihalomethanes)
- Trichloroethylene (TCE)
Brita® filters expire after filtering 40 gallons of water. (16) While this is a decent amount of water to filter, our Replacement Filter can filter 25x more water before needing to be replaced!
PUR® provides pitchers, dispensers, and faucet filter attachments very similar to what Brita® offers. PUR® filters are NSF- and WQA-certified to reduce over 70 different contaminants, and are certified to remove 99% of lead in your drinking water. (17) Here are some of the contaminants that PUR® filters are listed to remove:
- Chlorine taste and odor
- Class 1 particulates
- TTHMs (total trihalomethanes)
- Microbial cysts
- Industrial pollutants
PUR® recommends that you replace your filter every two months or 40 gallons. With our Replacement Filter, you can use your filter for up to six months or 1,000 gallons before needing to replace it. That means the Replacement Filter can last up to 3x longer and is up to 25x more efficient!
Nowadays, many people have built-in filters in their refrigerators, but these typically provide minimal filtration. Most refrigerator built-in filters use activated carbon, which is effective at removing chlorine, organic chemicals, benzene, radon, and bad tastes and odors. However, refrigerator filters are not built to remove waterborne contaminants, including soluble metals. (18)
These are some of the contaminants that refrigerator filters do not remove from your drinking water:
Other refrigerator filters are simple carbon filters; while these are NSF 42 certified, these typically only remove chlorine taste and smell. These types of filters do not remove more harmful contaminants such as lead or chromium-6. (19) With such a limited ability to filter contaminants, it is important that you rely on an additional source of filtration other than just your refrigerator.
Refrigerator filters typically last for about six months. Your Replacement Filter can last about six months, depending on how much water you use on a regular basis and how clean your Echo Water™ Machine is. However, even if your refrigerator filter and Replacement Filter last the same amount of time, you are getting far superior filtration with the Replacement Filter.
Clean Water With Every Sip
